Pieter Serneels is Associate Professor and Reader in Economics at the University of East Anglia. His research is on applied micro, behavioural and labour economics in low income countries, with a focus on human capital..

Pieter is a full member of the European Development Network (EUDN) and Experiments in Governance and Politics (EGAP). He is a visiting scholar at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University. Pieter co-directed the Centre for Behavioural and Experimental Social Sciences (CBESS) at the University of East Anglia, and has been visitor at the Centre for the Study of African Economies and the Department of International Development, both at the University of Oxford, among others. He has worked at the Universities of Oxford and Copenhagen, The World Bank and the International Labour Organization. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and books, and has given advice to governments in high, middle and low income countries.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in March 2009.
