In my research, I study how to make labour markets in low- and middle-income countries more efficient and more equitable. My work is based on extensive fieldwork and uses a mix of experimental and structural methods. Current research interests include the employment effects of search frictions, the impacts of job-loss risk and job-loss insurance in low-income labour markets, how different mental models of competition change firm decisions, and the intersection between labour market policy and climate change. I am associate editor at Econometrica, co-chair of the labour sector at J-PAL, and lead academic for the Ethiopia program of the International Growth Centre.
