John Robst is a Research Associate Professor with the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy and the Department of Economics at the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, and a Research Fellow at IZA (Institute for the Study of Labor), Bonn, Germany. He joined the University of South Florida in 2005. He was previously at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Baltimore, Maryland from 1999-2005. He was a Research Associate at the State University of New York-Binghamton, NY from 1995-1999.

He was trained under labor economist Solomon Polachek of State University of New York-Binghamton, and received a Ph.D. in economics in 1995. His fields of interest are labor economics, health economics, and the economics of education. Robst also received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Arts degrees from the State University of New York-Binghamton.

Robst served as an Associate Editor for the Economics of Education Review (2003-2008) and Research in Labor Economics (1995-1999). His articles have appeared in wide range of scholarly journals (such as American Economic Association Papers and Proceedings, Southern Economic Journal, Economics of Education Review, Research in Labor Economics, Labour Economics, Economics Letters, Eastern Economic Journal, Applied Economics, Applied Economics Letters, Education Economics, Health Services Research, Health Care Financing Review, International Journal of Health Care Finance and Economics, Manchester School, Conflict Management and Peace Science, Journal of Peace Research, International Journal of Manpower, Journal of Higher Education, Review of Industrial Organization, Atlantic Economic Journal, and Regional Science and Urban Economics) covering the areas of overeducation, labor market information, long-run labor market effects of childhood sexual abuse, gender and racial labor market differentials, efficiency in higher education, student-athlete outcomes, the relationship between international trade and conflict, the effect of insurance on health care utilization, Medicare supplemental insurance, and the development of risk adjusted payment systems for the U.S. Medicare and Medicaid programs. He routinely serves as a referee for a number of scholarly journals.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in August 2008.
