Mário Centeno is Special Advisor of the Board at the Banco de Portugal and Full Invited Professor of Economics at ISEG-UTL in Lisbon, where he teaches graduate courses on Labor Economics. His primary research interests include unemployment insurance and wage and job mobility, as well as income inequality. In 2001 he received the EEA Young Economist Award and in 2006 the Latin Union Award for scientific merit. He holds a Licenciatura in Economics and a M.A. in Applied Mathematics from Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, and a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in September 2009.
