Mark Hoekstra is an associate professor of economics at Texas A&M University and a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2006.

His research has addressed topics such as the returns to college quality, the role of peer effects in educational achievement and health, and the impact of income shocks on financial and marital outcomes. His research has been published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Public Economics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. Current projects focus on how individuals form racial preferences as well as how individuals respond to changes in self-defense law.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in January 2013.
