Manuel Fernández Sierra is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Universidad de los Andes.

His research lies at the intersection of labour, development, and health economics. He has examined the structural drivers of gender gaps in labour markets, the economic and environmental impacts of illicit economies, the role of local public goods in fostering tax compliance, and the health consequences of restrictions on access to medical care.

Manuel earned his DPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford in 2018, following an MPhil in Economics at Oxford in 2014. Before his doctoral studies, he worked at the Office of the Chief Economist for Latin America at the World Bank.

He became a Research Affiliate at IZA in 2018 and was appointed Research Fellow in 2023.
