Raquel Fernández is Professor of Economics at New York University and at the University of Oslo in Norway. She is a member of the Scientific Council of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, and a member of the Council of the European Economic Association and the Royal Economic Society. She is a Research Fellow of CEPR (Centre for Economic Policy, London), where she has been co-director of the Public Policy Program (1999-2007), a Research Associate of NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research), and a Research Fellow of IZA.
Professor Fernandez received her Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University (1988) and her B.A. in Economics, Magna Cum Laude, from Princeton University (1981). She has held permanent and visiting appointments at the London School of Economics, Boston University, University of Chicago, Free University of Brussels, and University Pompeu Fabra, and she has worked as a consultant for international organizations such as the World Bank. She has been a member of the editorial board of the Review of Economic Dynamics, the Journal of International Economics and Economic Policy, among others.
Raquel Fernandez has done most innovative work on issues such as culture and economics, marital sorting, the intergenerational transmission of inequality, and education policy. She has published extensively in the leading scientific journals. She received numerous awards and is regularly invited as keynote lecturer in international conferences.
Raquel Fernández joined IZA as a Research Fellow in September 2007.
