Gautam Hazarika completed his doctorate in Economics at the University of Rochester in 1998. He then taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is presently Associate Professor of Economics at The University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley. His research at the moment concerns the origins of gender inequality.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in December 2003.
