Italo Gutierrez is a Senior Economist at Amazon. Prior to Amazon, he was an economist at RAND, a core member of the RAND Center for Causal Inference, and a faculty member of the Pardee RAND Graduate School.

Italo’s research is predominantly in applied microeconomics, especially related to causal inference. He has used observational studies and randomized-controlled studies to evaluate the impact of job training programs, unemployment systems, employer downsizing, family planning programs, and effects of bullying on educational attainment. He has also used conjoint analysis (stated preference studies) to assess what features of formal employment workers value more. More recently, Italo is working on the intersection of big data, machine learning and causal inference to improve business decisions for customers.

Italo received a B.A. in economics from the Universidad del Pacífico (Peru) and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan. He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in March 2019.
