Alexandru Voicu obtained his B.A. in mechanical engineering in Bucharest, in 1992, and his M.A in economics from Central European University in Prague, in 1995. He received his Ph. D. in economics in May 2001 from Rutgers University with a dissertation on "Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo estimation of dynamic labor force participation models." His main research interests are the application of MCMC methods to a wide range of microeconometric models and the study of transition economies.

In October 2001, Alexandru Voicu joined IZA as a Research Associate. He is currently an Associate Professor of Economics at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island, and a member of the Doctoral Faculty at The Graduate School and University Center, City University of New York.
