Sumon Bhaumik received his undergraduate education at Presidency College, Calcutta, and got his masters and doctoral degrees in Economics from the University of Southern California. Later, he worked both within and outside of academics in Bulgaria, Germany, India and the United Kingdom. Currently, he is a Honorary Professor at the Management School at the University of Sheffield. Until recently, he had a Chair in Finance at the university.

He is also members of the peer-review and assessor colleges of ESRC, has served as an expert assessor for the Horizon Europe funding window, and has also served on Sub-panel 17 (Business & Management Studies) of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. He has served (or continues to serve) on the editorial (or editorial review) boards of the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of World Business, and the British Journal of Management.

His research interests are wide ranging, and include corporate governance and firm performance, banks and credit markets, multinational enterprises, and impact of economic reforms. In the past decade, he has worked on a number of projects funded by ESRC, DfID, NESTA, UKTI and UKIERI.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in September 2005.
