Robin Naylor is a Professor in the Department of Economics, where he has taught and researched since 1986. Previously, he studied at the LSE and Oxford. Robin is currently a Deputy Head of Department and on the Department’s Senior Management Team.

Robin’s current research focuses on the economic analysis of education, discrimination and socio-economic mobility. His work on the economics of education has received much attention in the media, with appearances on BBC2’s Newsnight, Radio 4’s Today Programme and the BBC’s Politics Show, and among policy-makers with a number of citations in Hansard and in official government reports. His research findings, in joint work with long-term co-author Jeremy Smith, have been particularly influential in driving widening participation strategies, especially in the adoption of contextualised offer policies across the UK HE sector.

Robin has taught on undergraduate core modules in microeconomics and on undergraduate and postgraduate models in labour economics and has supervised 12 PhD students, all successfully. Robin is also one of the original contributors to the innovative commons project developing the influential CORE curriculum. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Labour Economists and was the Deputy Secretary General of the Royal Economic Society from 2011 to 2018.
