Deepti Goel joined Pitzer College as an Assistant Professor in Economics in July 2023. Before this she was teaching at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, India. She is an applied micro-economist. Her research lies at the intersection of labor and development economics and can be grouped into two broad themes: social identities and efficacy of public expenditure. The first strand contributes to understanding how identities such as gender, caste, and immigrant status influence economic as well as non-economic outcomes including notions of self-worth. The second measures impacts of government financed programs and uncovers mechanisms through which impacts are mediated in order to inform how public expenditure can be made more effective. She received her Ph.D. in economics in 2009 from Boston University.

She joined IZA as a Research Affiliate in March 2008 and became a Research Fellow in December 2011.
