Marianne Wanamaker is an associate professor of economics at the University of Tennessee, where she has been on faculty since 2009. She also holds an appointment as a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Wanamaker received her B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 2001 and her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2009. In the interim, she was an associate consultant for the managerial consulting firm Bain Consulting in Boston, MA.

She currently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Economic History and Explorations in Economic History. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Spencer Foundation. She has been awarded numerous teaching awards at the University of Tennessee.

Wanamaker’s research centers on the labor market, education, and health experiences of black men in the United States over the past 150 years, from the emancipation of slaves to the present, and on human capital development in American history more broadly. Her work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, New York Magazine, and The Atlantic.

She joined IZA as a Research Fellow in November 2016.
