Pedro Telhado Pereira studied economics at the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa and the University of Minnesota, where he received his Ph. D in 1986 for his dissertation on determinants and consequences of pre-marital decisions in an environment with divorce.

He is Full Professor at the Universidade de Madeira, Portugal, and Research Associate of CEPR, London. He is the Director of CEEAplA. He previously held a position as Associate Professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal (since 1993)and was "Reitor" of Universdiade da Madeira from 2004 to 2009. During the year 1992/1993 he was a visiting researcher at the Tinbergen Institute, Netherlands, and the Universidade de S. Paulo, Brasil.

Since 1998, he is a fellow of the TSER Project "Labour Demand, Education and the Dynamics of Social Exclusion", supported by the EU. The project is conducted in cooperation with IZA, Bonn.

He has published several articles in collected volumes and in international journals and has edited several books, the most recent being "Returns to Human Capital in Europe: a Literature Review", ETLA, Finland and "A Reforma da Segurança Social - Contributos para Reflexão", Celta, Lisboa. His research interests include the study of the Portuguese labour market, emigration and social security system.



He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in August 1999.
