Pedro Gomes is Professor of Economics at Birkbeck, University of London, where he has been teaching since 2017. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid for seven years and a Visiting Professor at the University of Essex. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics in 2010. Earlier in his career, he also held positions at the European Central Bank and the Bank of England.

His research spans several areas of macroeconomics, including sovereign debt ratings, public-sector employment and wages, working-time reduction and the four-day week, labour market flows, human capital, and the interaction between macroeconomics and finance. He has published more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, including in leading journals such as The Economic Journal, American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, Quantitative Economics, European Economic Review, International Economic Review, Review of Economic Dynamics, and Labour Economics. His research has received over 1000 citations on Scopus and more than 3,400 on Google Scholar.

In 2021, he published Friday is the New Saturday, in which he develops his vision of the four-day week as a more efficient and sustainable way of organising the economy in the twenty-first century. The book received critical acclaim, was named a Financial Times Book of the Month, and has been translated into Portuguese, Korean, Italian, and Spanish. In 2022, he was invited by the Portuguese government to coordinate the country's first four-day week pilot programme in the private sector. In 2026, he co-coordinate a second four-day week pilot for the Regional Government of Azores.

He joined IZA as a Research Affiliate in November 2010 and became a Research Fellow in July 2014.
