Nils Gottfries is professor of economics at Uppsala University since 1994. He received his Ph. D. at Stockholm University in 1985 and he was research fellow at the Institute for International Economic Studies from 1985 to 1994. He was editor of the Scandinavian Journal of Economics 2006-2009.

His research focuses on the supply side of macroeconomics, price and wage formation, and the level and dynamics of unemployment. In the macro/labor area he has written on the persistence of unemployment, insider wage bargaining, labor contracts, efficiency wages, turnover, profit sharing, dual labor markets, ranking, and employment determination on the firm level. Recent research is focusing on studies of firm dynamics using panel data. These studies examine various aspects of firm behaviour, e.g. employment, production, pricing and investment.

Recent publications include "Ranking of Job Applicants, On-the-job Search and Persistent Unemployment" (with Stefan Eriksson), Labour Economics, 2005, "Prices, Productivity, and Wage Bargaining in Open Economies" (with Anders Forslund and Andreas Westermark), Scandinavian Journal of Economics, 2008, "Price and Investment Dynamics: Theory and Plant Level Data" (with Magnus Lundin, Charlotte Bucht, and Tomas Lindström), Journal of Money Credit and Banking, 2009, and "Product Market Imperfections and Employment Dynamics", (with Mikael Carlsson and Stefan Eriksson), Oxford Economic Papers, 2013.

His new textbook in intermediate MACROECONOMICS was published by Palgrave-Macmillan in 2013:

The idea of the book is to build macroeconomic theory from microeconomics while still allowing for realistic imperfections and rigidities. Labour market frictions, unemployment, and short run wage rigidity play important roles in the analysis.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in January 2001.
