Johannes Schmieder is currently an Associate Professor in the Economics Department at Boston University. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from from Columbia University where he studied between 2004 and 2010. Prior to joining Columbia he completed a B.A. in Philosophy and Economics the University of Bayreuth.

His research lies at the intersection between Labor and Public economics. In particular he has worked on the impact of unemployment insurance (UI) and other transfer policies on job search behavior of unemployed workers; the psychology of job search among the unemployed and incorporating insights from behavioral economics into standard job search models; and how changes in the firm structure, e.g. due to vertical disintegration or domestic outsourcing, have impacted labor market outcomes of workers.
