Jan is a Research Fellow at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. Apart from IZA, he is also affiliated to the LCC Centre of Excellence and Netspar. Jan has obtained his PhD degree in Economics at Tilburg University, and his Bachelor degree in Economics at Charles University of Prague. During his studies he stayed at University of Pennsylvania and University of Sydney as a visiting scholar.

His research interests lie at the intersection of labor economics, applied econometrics and family economics.

He believes that it is crucial to build models which incorporate the interdependencies of major decisions taken by a household. This means that the models should evaluate the policy in a broader context, allowing for secondary effects and unintended consequences. He maintains that this is a necessary step for more informed, more efficient and more desirable policy design.

Jan joined IZA as a Research Affiliate in August 2013 and became a Research Fellow in December 2023.
