Our Network

With over 2,000 Research Fellows and Affiliates spanning more than 450 research institutions worldwide, the IZA@LISER Network is the largest global network dedicated to labor economics.

Network Structure

Renowned economists from across the globe are connected to the IZA Network as Research Fellows. Now coordinated at LISER, the network continues its tradition of excellence: Fellows contribute to its prestigious publication series, participate in international conferences, and collaborate on joint research projects. To further strengthen these synergies, a dedicated visiting program will enhance the scientific exchange between network members and the research staff at LISER.

The IZA Network fosters rising stars by actively inviting talented early-career researchers to join us as Research Affiliates.

How to become a member of the IZA@LISER Network

1. What are the benefits of network membership?

Our network members particularly value the opportunity to pre-publish their latest work in the IZA Discussion Paper Series, the largest and most influential working paper series in the field. We are also currently planning to expand the opportunities to benefit from IZA@LISER membership through research visits, jointly organized events and other forms of collaboration.

2. What is the difference between Fellow and Affiliate status?

While IZA Fellows are usually well-established researchers with a strong publication record, junior researchers who recently completed their PhD can become IZA Affiliates. As their academic career progresses, they can be promoted to IZA Fellow status following a routine evaluation process. IZA Affiliates do not need to be nominated again for IZA Fellow status.

3. As a non-member, can I apply for membership?

We do not accept applications. If you are interested in joining our network, you would need to be nominated by an incumbent IZA Fellow and supported by a second IZA Fellow.

4. How does the nomination process work?

All IZA Research Fellows can nominate potential new members every year during the month of February using our platform at network.iza.org. Nominations must include the nominee's personal details, CV and a letter of recommendation, as well as the name and e-mail address of the second nominator, who will then receive an upload link for her/his recommendation letter. Only complete nominations will be evaluated by a rotating committee of IZA members.

Update May 2026: Since there has been no nomination round in February 2026 due to the network’s transition to LISER, we are currently organizing the next round for mid-2026, to be announced to the network shortly.

5. How long does the evaluation process take?

The process usually takes a few weeks after the end of the nomination period.

6. Who will be informed about the outcome of the evaluation?

IZA Fellows can check the status of their nominations any time at network.iza.org. Nominees will only be notified if the evaluation is positive and leads to an invitation to join the IZA network.

7. Can the same person be nominated multiple times?

If a nomination was unsuccessful, the same person can be nominated again in the following years.

8. Does membership in the IZA network expire?

Membership is granted for an initial period of five years and will renew for successive one-year periods unless terminated by either party.
