Askitas Nikos Askitas studied Mathematics and computer science at the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki (Greece) where he graduated in 1988. Sponsored by a Fulbright Scholarship, in 1990 he received his Masters degree in Mathematical Logic from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana (USA). He became interested in Topology with particular emphasis in Four Dimensional Manifold Theory and obtained his Ph.D. in 1994 for his thesis "On 2-spheres in 4-manifolds".

In 1994 he became a Leibniz Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institut for Mathematics in Bonn (Germany). From 1997 to 1998 he shifted his research focus to Classical Knot Theory and Computer Science. He also worked on commercial web design projects for various Bonn-based businesses. In 1999 he was Visiting Fellow at the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki. Nikos is a member of the DDI alliance Experts Committee, advisor at the Open Data Foundation and a member of the Knowledge Exchange Primary Research Data Working Group.

He has published papers in mathematical journals such as Manuscripta Mathematica, Mathematische Zeitschrift, Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, The Kobe Journal of Japan, Topology and Its Applications. He is also the author of several stata modules. His interests include Remote Access/Computing/Processing, Data management, Systems Design, Internet Econometrics.

Nikos Askitas joined IZA as an IT Specialist in March 2000. In January 2008 he became Deputy Head of IT and in August 2008 he became Head of the Institute's International Data Service Center and IZA CTO.
