Sylvie Démurger is CNRS Research Professor affiliated with the Center for Economic Research on Governance, Inequality and Conflict (CERGIC) and the Department of Economics at ENS de Lyon. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Paris 1.

Her main fields of research are development economics, labor economics, migration and inequalities, applied to the Chinese case. Her recent research work focuses on how internal migration in China is linked to both urban and rural development, in order to understand how the massive transfer of labor from the countryside to the cities affects the process of production and transmission of inequalities in China.

She joined IZA as a Research Fellow in July 2013.
