Stephen Jenkins is Professor of Economic and Social Policy at the London School of Economics. He was Professor of Economics at the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex 1994-2010, and ISER Director April 2006-August 2009. Previous employment: Professor of Applied Economics, University of Wales Swansea (1991-94); Lecturer, University of Bath (1983-91); Research Fellow, University of York (1979, 1981-83); Junior Lecturer in Economics, Massey University, New Zealand (1978). He received his D.Phil in 1983 from the University of York, UK. He is Honorary Professor, University of Melbourne; Visiting Professor, University of Essex; and has been a Research Professor at the DIW-Berlin. He was Chair (President) of the Council for the International Association for Research on Income and Wealth 2006-8, President of the European Society for Population Economics in 1998, and will be President of the Society for Study of Economic Inequality (ECINEQ), 2021-3. Stephen's first published papers were about the intergenerational inheritance of income and the economics of English provincial repertory theatre, but most subsequent ones have been about income distribution and the labour market. His current research focuses on income and poverty trends and dynamics, labour force transitions, and measurement errors of various kinds. Stephen's publications have appeared in a wide range of international journals and edited volumes. His most recent books are The Great Recession and the Distribution of Household Incomes, OUP 2013 (co-edited with Andrea Brandolini, John Micklewright and Brian Nolan), and Changing Fortunes: Income Mobility and Poverty Dynamics in Britain, OUP 2011,

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in September 2000.
