Gig Jobs, Labor-Market Opportunities, and Offending PY - 2026/Oct/ PB - Institute of Labor Economics (IZA) CY - Bonn T2 - IZA Discussion Paper IS - 19006 UR - https://www.iza.org/index.php/publications/dp19006 AB - We study how access to low-barrier gig work affects labor markets and crime, exploiting the staggered rollout of food-delivery platforms across France. Platform entry increases delivery-worker registrations, reduces unemployment among men and inactivity among male migrants, and lowers crime, especially vandalism, petty theft, and drug offenses. Crime falls among young adults just above the legal minimum age of 18 for delivery work, but not among minors just below it. Using national criminal records, we also find that reoffending declines among offenders whose records permit platform work, but not among others. Lowering barriers to legal income can reduce low-skill offending. KW - gig economy KW - crime KW - labor-market opportunities KW - digital platforms ER -
