Research Interests

Elliott Fan is currently a professor and the graduate director at the Department of Economics, National Taiwan University (NTU). He obtained his doctoral degree in Economics from University of Toronto in 2006. He then joined the Social Policy Analysis, Evaluation and Research (SPEAR) Centre at the Australian National University as a research fellow (2006-2011), and late NTU (2011-). Elliott Fan has published a number of papers in top-ranked economics journals. His research interest has been focused mainly on the fields of applied microeconomics, family economics, development economics, and economic history. His recent research effort focuses on two fields. The first one explores the postwar institutional and cultural features that led to the better socioeconomic status enjoyed by Taiwanese females than their Japanese and Korean counterparts. The second one takes advantage of the extremely rich archival data covering the colonial era (1895-1945) to explore the reasons behind missing women in Taiwan during that time period.

Elliott Fan joined IZA as a Research Fellow in December 2020.
