Stefano Verzillo is an Applied Econometrician at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), where he conducts research on counterfactual impact evaluation and microeconometric methods to support EU policies. Since 2012, he has also served as Adjunct Professor of Statistical Modeling, Data Mining, and Machine Learning at the University of Milan-Bicocca.

He holds a degree in Economic Statistics from the University of Milan-Bicocca (2009) and a PhD in Economics from the University of Milan (2013). Prior to joining the EC-Joint Research Centre, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Economics of the University of Milan from 2012 to 2016.

His research mainly adopts counterfactual impact evaluation methods in labour, education, and health economics, as well as in the economics of science. His work relies extensively on administrative data and quasi-experimental methods to study how reforms, incentives, and public policies affect individuals, households, firms, and research organizations.

His research has been published in several journals, including Econometrica, The Review of Economics and Statistics, and Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series A.

Stefano Verzillo currently serves as Associate Editor of the Southern Economic Journal.
