Dr. Abu S. Shonchoy is a Professor of Economics at Florida International University (FIU). Before joining FIU, he was a visiting scholar at New York University, a tenured research fellow at the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO) in Japan, and an adjunct assistant professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) at the University of Tokyo.

An applied economist specializing in global development issues, Dr. Shonchoy focuses on evidence-based policy research spanning financial inclusion, migration, labor markets, human capital, climate vulnerability, and education. He has extensive field experience conducting research and experiments in South Asia and West Africa, leading over 25 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs). His work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Health Economics, and American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, and he is the author of the book Seasonality and Micro-credit, published by Springer.

Dr. Shonchoy is an Affiliated Professor at MIT's Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), a Research Affiliate with the International Growth Centre (IGC), a Research Fellow at IZA and GLO, and the founder and chief advisor of the MOMODa Foundation, a research-based NGO in Bangladesh. His research has been recognized with honors including the Khalifa International Award for Early Learning, FIU Top Scholar Award, JADE Fuwa Award, ADB-IEA Innovative Policy Research Award, Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship, and the Albert Berry Prize from the Canadian Economics Association.

Abu Shonchoy joined IZA as a Research Fellow in October 2019.
