Michael S. Kofoed

Michael Kofoed is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a joint appointment in the Department of Economics and the Boyd Center for Business and Economics Research in the Haslam College of Business. I am an IZA Research Fellow, a visiting scholar at the Consumer Finance Institute at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and an invited researcher at J-PAL North America.

His research interests include the economics of education, higher education finance, economics of financial aid, labor economics, health economics, defense economics, and applied microeconometrics.

Previously, he served as an Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Social Science at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Mike earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Quantitative Economics from Weber State University and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Georgia. His research has been published in leading academic journals such as American Economic Review: Insights, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Human Resources, and Journal of Health Economics. Some of his research has been cited in popular press outlets such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal¸ and Inside Higher Education. Mike has twice been the recipient of the Early Career Research Award from the Upjohn Institue for Employment Research.

Michael Kofoed joined IZA as a Research Fellow in May 2020.
