Selma Walther is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the Department of Economics, University of Sussex, and holds a BA (Hons), MPhil and PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on labour economics, with a particular interest in family economics and household finance.

In recent work, she analyzes how women trade off career and fertility in the US, in the context of the sharp reduction in mortality triggered by the invention of the first antibiotics. She also has an ongoing research agenda on the linkages between human capital, labor market opportunities and portfolio allocations.

Selma Walther joined IZA as a Research Affiliate in October 2018 and became an IZA Research Fellow in December 2023.
