Indian Institute of Management Bangalore

Tirthatanmoy Das is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). He received his PhD from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 2012. Before joining IIMB, he was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Central Florida from 2014 to 2017 and Temple University from 2012 to 2014.

Das' research interests span labor economics, econometrics, health economics, and behavioral economics. He studies interpersonal heterogeneity, government policies, and their impact on workers' labor market and health outcomes. Specifically, his research concentrates on the role of multidimensional abilities, psychological traits, and government policy in determining workers' educational attainment, earnings, occupational choices, and search behavior. Additionally, his research focuses on the impacts of government policies and economic reforms on workers’ educational attainment, health, and labor market outcomes in India. In short, he analyses policy-oriented human developmental issues in both developed and developing countries.

Das's research utilizes structural as well as reduced-form estimations. In order to perform complex nonlinear structural estimations, he utilizes algorithms (e.g., genetic algorithms, simulated annealing) applied in other disciplines, such as computational biology and bioengineering. His reduced-form estimations focus on empirically identifying causal relationships based on observational data from natural/quasi-natural experiments.

Tirthatanmoy Das joined IZA as a Research Fellow in February 2013.
