Alessandro Cigno is Professor of Economics in the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Florence since 1994. He is also President of CHILD, and a Fellow of CESifo (Munich) and IZA (Bonn).
Professor Cigno received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Economics from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 1972, and has held permanent or visiting appointments at several universities in Europe, the USA and Latin America, including, as a full professor, Pisa, Hull and Wisconsin (Madison). He has served as a consultant for Cooperazione Italiana, UNICEF and the World Bank on matters relating to child labour and social security. He is also an editor of the Journal of Population Economics
Professor Cigno's early research was concerned with the dynamic modelling of production and investment processes. Over the last three decades, however, his research has concentrated manly on household economics. His reputation is largely based on his contributions to the microeconomics of fertility, intergenerational transfers, and the optimal fiscal treatment of families. His work is published in several books (including Economics of the Family, 1991, and The Economics of Child Labour, 2005) and academic journals (including Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Journal of Public Economics, Oxford Economic Papers and Review of Economic Studies).
In 1991, he was President of the European Society for Population Economics.
Alessandro Cigno joined IZA as a Research Fellow in October 1999. |
