Christopher A. Pissarides is a Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics (LSE) and the Director of the research programme on Technology and Growth at the Centre for Economic Performance. He graduated with a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics in 1974. After brief spells at the Central Bank of Cyprus and the University of Southampton, he returned to LSE in 1976 as lecturer in economics. He was appointed to a Chair in 1986. In 1999 he completed a three-year term as Head of the Economics Department.
His main research interests are in macroeconomics and the theory of labor markets, focusing on the influence of labor market frictions in the explanation of unemployment, wage inequality and labor market adjustments. The policy focus of his work has been mainly on the role of active and passive labor market policy in the functioning of labor markets. More recently he has shifted attention to the regulation of businesses and its implications for the labor market. His extensive publication list includes his well-known book on Equilibrium Unemployment Theory, (2nd ed., MIT Press 2000).
Christopher Pissarides is a fellow of the British Academy, a fellow of the Econometric Society, a member of Council of the Royal Economic Society, a research fellow of CEPR, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Cyprus and a specialist advisor to the UK Treasury Committee. In addition, he has been a consultant at the World Bank, the European Commission and the OECD.
He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in August 2001. He received the 2005 IZA Prize in Labor Economics and the 2010 Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences. |
