Sarmistha Pal is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Economics at Brunel University West London. She is an Indian national and obtained BSc and MSc in Economics from University of Calcutta. Subsequently she has received MPhil in Economics from St. John’s College, University of Cambridge (UK) and PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics (UK).
She is a development economist with interests in the economics of education, health and institutions in developing and transition economies. Her current and recent research includes work on fiscal decentralisation and local public infrastructure in Indonesia, elite dominance and under-investment in basic education in India, public and private schooling in India, Indonesia and Nepal, health inputs and child mortality in Bangladesh and India, effect of private practice on public doctors' labour supply behaviour in Indonesia, cash transfers and old age poverty in the Indian states, effects of ownership on capital structure and firm value in East Asia, effects of institutions on foreign ownership and effects of networking on firm financing in old and new Europe.
Previously she was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Business Research at the University of Cambridge and Development Studies Institute, London School of Economics.
She has worked as consultant for the Home Office (UK), IFC and the World Bank.
She joined IZA as a Research Fellow in May 2007. In addition, she is a research affiliate at the Centre for the Study of African Economies, University of Oxford. |
