Abstract:

This paper examines returns to overseas work experience and shows the extent to which temporary migration impact on human capital by affecting wages of migrants upon return to the home country. The paper controls for two potential selectivity biases arising from the migration choice and from the waged employment participation decision when estimating wages of return migrants and non-migrants in Egypt. The findings provide strong evidence that overseas employment and temporary migration result in a wage premium upon return. On average, return migrants earn around 38 percent more than non-migrants. Both the duration of migration and overseas occupation contribute to the wage premium experienced by return migrants
