About the Course |
The IZA/DFID Program on Growth and Labor Markets in Low-Income Countries is sponsoring a one-day "IZA/DFID Conference on Training Programs and Labor Markets in Africa: Evidence and Policy Lessons" on Friday December 13, 2013. More information on the conference will be available here in due course.
This will be followed by a two-day "IZA/DFID Short Course on Evaluation of Training Programs" on Saturday December 14 and Sunday December 15. The course is designed for postgraduate students, faculty members, and researchers in government and non-governmental organizations who would like to develop their skills in the evaluation of training program using the latest econometric methods.
The course will consist of four half-day sessions and will cover the following topics:
design and analysis of randomized controlled trials in training programs
propensity score matching methods
difference-in-difference estimators
regression discontinuity designs
The focus will be on application of these methods to the evaluation of skills training programs, especially in Africa.
The target class size is 40 participants. The course is intended for participants from low-income countries (for a list of countries, see here). In particular, priority will be given to participants from low-income African countries based in African institutions who are involved in the design, implementation, or analysis of training programs, or plan to be involved in the future. The course and the conference will be conducted in English.

Funding |
|
Participants who are selected for the course will be provided with all travel expenses and will be provided with food and accommodation from Thursday night December 12 through Monday morning December 16. Participants who are selected will be required to be in attendance for the full period, including the one-day conference on Friday December 13. |

Optional letter of reference from an adviser or supervisor (for employees of governmental and non-governmental organizations it is helpful to have a letter from a supervisor confirming that you will be given time off to attend the course)
All applications must be received by September 4, 2013. Notification of acceptance will be sent by e-mail by October 4, 2013. All application materials must be submitted via the online application form.
